Dia de los Muertos

Show Description

This high-energy show strives to bring the spirit of the traditional holiday "Dia de los Muertos" to the marching band field. Programs are encouraged to research and explore authentic portrayals of this holiday, which is more a celebration than a "spooky" holiday (like Halloween). The outer movements use Moncayo's Huapango as a basis, and the "Marionettes" movement is built from Revueltas' work Sensemayá, with a dark and somewhat unsettling 7/8 feel. The "Ofrendas" movement is more introspective, but still uplifting as we honor those who have departed before us. This show is a great opportunity for directors, students, and parents to explore a traditional Mexican holiday in an entertaining and respectful manner.
